Dec. 13, 2019: Safer-by-design course

Today I gave a lecture (by visioconference!) as part of the safer-by-design course organized by Corinne Chanéac, Bernard Cathala and Mélanie Auffan in Dijon. I discussed the application of this approach to lanthanide oxysulfide nanoparticles.

Nov. 29, 2019: Clara Immerwahr Award

Unisyscat, the interdisciplinary catalysis research network based in Berlin, awarded me the 2020 Clara Immerwahr Award. The award is dedicated to Dr. Clara Immerwahr (1870-1915), who was the first woman  in Germany to earn a doctorate in Physical Chemistry in 1900.

This creates a great opportunity for future collaboration with teams in Germany, at Fritz-Haber Institute, TU Berlin, and more.

Nov. 25-27, 2019: NanOperando Conference

The second meeting of NanOperando, the national hub about monitoring nanoparticles & nanomaterials in gas and liquids, takes place in Amiens this week. Alexy is presenting recent work of the team about in situ XANES on nanoparticles.

November 8, 2019: Chemists at the heart of nanotechnologies

At the invitation of the magazine "La Jaune et la Rouge", I wrote a piece, titled "Nanotechnologies : les chimistes au cœur des dernières avancées". It deals with the role of chemistry (and chemists) in the field of nanotechnologies, nowadays and for the years ahead.

The article is part of the issue of Ecole Polytechnique alumni association on chemistry, at the occasion of the international year of the periodic table.

October 30-31, 2019: Doctoral School Days

During two days, all the third-year PhD students are presenting their work with a short oral presentation and a poster. Fellow PhD students of all years and labs can ask questions in this conference. Kim presented her work on molybdenum-containing nanoparticles. Besides, I was invited to give a talk about our most recent results on metal-containing nanoparticles.

October 24, 2019: Article in ACS Nano

In the framework of ANR project InSiChem, lead by Prof. Ovidiu Ersen (IPCMS, Strasbourg), we publish this work centered on the in situ TEM analysis of nanoscaled Co3O4 electrocatalysts. The study unravels unexpected morphological and structural evolution of this oxide. Read the paper.

Minh defended today his PhD about "Safer-by-design emerging nanomaterials: the case of bimetallic gadolinium-cerium oxysulfides", directed by Prof. Corinne Chanéac and Dr. Sophie Lanone (from Inserm/Institut Mondor). Congrats for a great defense and discussion with the jury!

July 26, 2019: Bimetallic phosphides nanoparticles

Meticulous work at the bench and the microscope finally brought us to understand what happens to core-shell copper-nickel nanoparticles reacted with white phosphorus: copper migrates out!

This was achieved within a consortium of teams: two teams at Sorbonne Université, Nicolas Mézailles team at LHFA and Ovidiu Ersen team at IPCMS. Read the paper.

July 17-22, 2019: At LUCIA beamline

This week, we are studying molybdenum and sulfur at LUCIA beamline. In collaboration with Benedikt Lassalle from Soleil synchrotron, we analyze nanoparticles under electrochemical conditions. We measure x-ray absorption spectra in the so-called "tender x-ray" domain, to gain insight on the oxidation state of both elements.

As an active member and former lead of the Governance Team of the International Younger Chemists Network, I moderated today the finalization of the network Statutes and Bylaws. Just accepted at Chem. Mater., our study of the bandgap of (Gd,Ce)2O2S nanoparticles, combining synthesis, DFT, PDF, UPS, photoluminescence and more. This is a collaboration with the teams of A. Gauzzi and L. Paulatto (IMPMC), C. Géantet (IRCELyon) P. Lecante (CEMES) and also many contributors from LCMCP.

June 20, 2019: Post-doc position opening

There is an opening to join the group as a post-doctoral fellow, from September 2019, on the "Colloidal catalysis under soft reaction conditions for the activation of small molecules". The project is in the scope of ERC NanoFLP.

The candidate should have a strong background in catalysis, homogeneous or heterogeneous, using nanoparticles or organometallic complexes. He/she should have a background in inorganic chemistry and materials science.

June 18, 2019: Copper and NHCs

In this study, we explored a direct route to copper nanoparticles stabilized by NHC ligands. We also investigated the reaction mechanism to explain the stoichiometry of the NHC-borane precursor.

This work was done in collaboration with Louis Fensterbank's team at IPCM and Dimitri Mercier at Chimie Paristech. Read the paper.

June 18-24, 2019: Cells and nanoparticles at SMIS beamline

In the context of our Safer-by-design Nanoparticles project, we are analyzing cells exposed to sub-lethal doses of gadolinium oxysulfide nanoparticles by infra-red microscopy. and performing a PCA analysis of hundreds of spectra using Quasar. We hope to understand more about potential toxicity of the nanoparticles, thanks to Christophe Sandt for his expertise and help!

June 5, 2019: Article on nano-Magnéli

This study, led by David Portehault, deals with "differential reactivity of rutile and anatase TiO2 nanoparticles: synthesis and surface states of nanoparticles of mixed valence Magnéli oxides." NAP-XPS was used to characterize the surface of the nanoparticles exposed to gases.

May 17, 2019: Paper out about Dumbbell-shaped POSS

This work belongs to a franco-japanese collaborative project, lead by Michel Wong Chi Man (ICGM) on the french side. We build functional nanomaterials from molecular building blocks. The results presented in article are from the PhD thesis of Nadège. Congrats !

Today, I am in Nancy where I will give a conference to the benefit of schoolteachers for the Lorraine region. I will discuss nanoparticles and nanomaterials, but also the role of the chemist in this quest as well as the perception of this topic in the society. Looking forward to the discussion afterward!

April 28-May 3, 2019: General Meeting of the Global Young Academy

The meeting brings together early career scientists from all disciplines and all parts of the world, at the German Academy of Science Leopoldina, in Halle near Leipzig.

In addition to conferences, I am also participating to working groups about "trust in young scientists", "importance of fundamental research", "women in sciences", etc. We will see what comes out in a few months!

March 26-April 1st, 2019: Back at TEMPO beamline

This week, we are studying the reactivity of metal-containing nanoparticles using near-ambient-pressure XPS at the TEMPO beamline in SOLEIL. We are adding gaz onto the nanoparticles while heating them and analyzing their surface.

The picture shows Kim, Antoine and Rémi transfering the sample in the analysis chamber... a delicate operation! Big cheers to Jean-Jacques Gallet and Fabrice Bournel for helping us with the experiments.

March 20, 2019: PhD Defense of Nadège in Montpellier

Nadège Rey defended today her PhD about silicon-based linkers for the contruction of 2D and 3D materials. Her project was part of an international collaboration with M. Wong-Chi-Man team in ICGM, K. Kuroda team in Waseda University and our team in Paris. Big congrats to Nadège for a great work!

March 8, 2019: New paper out

Serendipity was key for the team entering in the field of silane activation! We found that KC8 acts as a catalyst for the dismutation of PMHS. This article is published as a part of ChemCatChem special issue about #WomenInCatalysis and was highlighted as VIP paper on March 8th.

Feb. 21, 2019: Habilitation Defense

Today, I defended the Habilitation (HDR) at Sorbonne University, in front of an international jury, on the topic of "Metal-containing nanoparticles: design and reactivity". Great discussions and greet feedback from the audience! I am grateful to many colleagues especially in the Nano team, and to the amazing younger colleagues I have or had the chance to be an advisor for.

Today, Kim presented her results during the weekly lab seminar. She discussed recent advances in the field of molybdenum-containing oxysulfide nanoparticles. A lively talk and a lot of questions from the room!

Feb. 8, 2019: Thermal behavior of Gd2O2S covered with ligands

Another paper out for the nanoscaled oxysulfide project. Here, we focus on Gd2O2S nanoplates prepared by colloidal solution and stabilized by oleate capping agent. We show how they behave during inert and oxidizing thermal treatments and analyze the decomposition path of the ligands. We identify how to remove the ligands without affecting the nanostructure. This work is a collaboration with colleages at IEMN and IMPMC. Check the paper.

Four years ago, I participated as a young scientist to the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, an interdisciplinar conference with attendees from more than 80 countries, and I heard about the Global Young Academy, "the voice of young scientists around the world". In this article, we decipher the magnetic properties of (Gd,Ce)2O2S nanoplates prepared by colloidal solution. This complements our previous description of their surface reactivity.
